European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
