In excess of two dozen Olympic medal winners, mentors and additional world-class competitors have signed a statement calling for a halt to the execution of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is facing execution in the country.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

Amidst rising global condemnation over Iran’s increasing application of the death penalty as a tool of repression, the strongly worded statement condemns the authorities's verdict to confirm the capital punishment of the boxing champion.

Vafaei Sani, 30, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was arrested for being involved in national uprisings in 2019 and accused of backing an opposition group. He has spent half a decade in detention, where he has been abused and kept in seclusion.

“Competition is designed to encourage hope, solidarity, and fortitude,” the supporters expressed. “The capital punishment of a champion for his opinions is a direct assault on these values and a warning to any competitor who dares to express dissent.

Pattern of Putting to Death Athletes

The letter said that the boxer's situation was not unique and underscored the country's record of executing sports champions for their convictions, including a national team leader, captain of the football side, and a women's sports leader, skipper of the women's volleyball squad. In two thousand twenty, an athlete, a 27-year national wrestling champion, faced the death penalty.

Other endorsers to the letter comprise a sailing champion, who skippered the pioneering women's squad in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to earn a prestigious nautical honor; the previous captain of the soccer side a sports advocate; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the 1978 World Cup.

Apprehension and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was detained in the spring of 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of government belongings”. His verdict has been annulled twice but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the latest review. His legal proceedings was denounced as “highly unjust” by human rights activists and bodies.

Urging to International Body

The urging to halt the athlete's capital punishment follows a previous statement to the global human rights chief for freedoms, endorsed by more than one hundred advocates and entities, calling for action to avert the athlete’s execution.

Execution Crisis

According to findings, there is an “execution crisis in the nation, which has achieved shocking proportions”. In 2023, the government sentenced at least 853 people – a 48% rise on 2022. Last year, data showed 972 executions, marking the maximum count since two thousand fifteen. Over 800 people have been sentenced so far in the current year.

Dissidents and dissidents are focus, especially in the aftermath of the 2022 demonstrations. Experts say the regime have utilized the death penalty to suppress dissent, generate anxiety among the population and tighten their hold on rule.
